Face Time Well-to-Hue Eyeshadow

Niche perfume and niche makeup are not equal. I have very few positive things to say about mass market fragrances of the last decade (I still buy an occasional vintage bottle, though). However, very often the same companies make the best makeup or skin care items. And while I'm always happy to try and find new favorites among the smaller cosmetics and makeup brands, I have yet to to be fully wowed and converted by them. Still, some of these lines are better than others

Face Time is one such company, created by NY entrepreneur Linsey Snyder. The concept behind the line is makeup items that are easy to coordinate, free of fads and ugly trends, and focused on making the wearer look pretty. That alone is a good enough reason to celebrate. They even offer a foolproof system: Beauty In A Box, a full collection of matching items, that includes everything one needs to make her face. They will even help you make a custom box according to your needs.
As cute as the boxes are, I chose to go a-la-cart. After all, I have absolutely no need of another black eyeliner pencil or mascara. I can also survive without a new blush for the time being (the noise you're hearing is the shelves and drawers that hold my makeup sighing with relief. Yes, my storage system has emotions). Today we'll talk about about eye shadows.

I chose two, Lauren's Loyalty and Jamie's Gem. The former is described as "oyster", or in plain English", beige. I hoped for a highlighter, but instead got a very sheer, gently shimmering wash that looks identical in color to my skin. It's not really the eye shadow's fault. It's my peculiar coloring that doesn't let light shades do their thing on my brow bone. The best I can expect in this department is a nice texture that doesn't look chalky and wouldn't crease under the elements. I definitely got it here, together with the delicate shimmer I mentioned above. I'm assuming that on someone who is a tone or two lighter than me,the effect would be nicer. The very pale should be careful, because "oyster" is probably not the best highlighting hue they can find.

The second color, Jamie's Gem is, might be a golden olive, as described, but the gold is very subdued and the olive has tons of green in it. It's very pigmented and requires the lightest touch and a good brush (I use a slanted crease brush from Sephora's professional series). It's easy to blend and looks very flattering with my coloring (that's my reward for being naturally green). It doesn't crease, even without an eye primer, but if you want it not to fade throughout the day, you'd better use one.

All in all, Face Time eye shadows are very nice, and so far are the best product I've tried of this brand (reviews of their face primer and lip gloss are coming soon).

Face Time products are available online from the company's website, which is where I bought the products I tried. Each eye shadow retails for $12.

BFF Bridal did not disappoint. Tuesday night's "Beauty and Style" event reminded me of the ultimate slumber party complete with makeovers, midnight snacks and dress up. I honestly could have stayed all night and wish I would have brought my bridesmaids, my mom and yes, my groom.

Hosted at the W New York- Union Square, the line was once again wrapped around corners and down stairs but this time, I learned my lesson and got there early. Upon entering, brides-to-be and their guests were greeted by the sweet smell of beauty (a mix of perfume and powder) and cocktails by Midori. If you haven't thought about signature cocktails, do it. It's a great way of incorporating color at the bar, in this case it was Midori green.

I quickly found myself chatting and then sitting with Face Time cosmetics, of the famed Beauty in a Box...A brilliant idea for a bridesmaid gift, the Beauty in a Box ($90) is foolproof beauty, even for a klutz like me. Each box contains an assortment of classic beauty products, along with step-by-step lessons on how to get an array of looks like Sultry, Stunning, Romantic. I was feeling Sultry (with another cocktail in hand.) Moments later, my eyelids were smokey and yes, celebrity quality sultry.

Velvet is a girl's best friend

Face Time Velvet Veil Primer is my new addiction. My boyfriend and I love to go to The Hudson Hotel in New York for some drinks and dancing. Now when I say dance, I don’t mean some slight shaking of the hips. NO, NO, not at all, remember I’m Dominican. I’m talking some straight, out of control, booty shaking, hips gyrating; drop it like its hot, show stopping fun. Although I go through great pains to put my makeup on when I go out with my honey, by the end of the night, it’s been completely sweated off and I’m left with my plain old face;oh and my raccoon eyes of course.

When I first got this primer, I was really excited. The fact that this contains Jojoba oil was a huge plus to me (you know how much I love my oils). Because the structure of jojoba oil closely resembles that of your own skin sebum, it is an excellent moisturizer and is ideal for all skin types without promoting acne or any other skin problems. I applied this primer and then my foundation. HOly CRAPOLA, my skin looked FLAWLESS, I mean seriously, my face looked airbrushed. Even my boyfriend (who notices nothing) kept commenting on how great I looked. So we went to the Hudson Hotel, and danced our sexy butts off. When I went to the bathroom at the end of the night,I was expecting to look into the mirror and stare at a sweaty face devoid of makeup. However, what greeted me in the mirror was not at all what I expected. I was flabbergasted. My makeup looked new and fresh as if I had just applied it. As I wiped the sweat off of my face with a napkin, my makeup stayed intact. This product is a MUST HAVE!!!!!!! And I mean it.

One product...many uses

I love products and I have an appreciation for quality and quantity...but, I try to be less indulgent. So, it is a big day when I find a great multi-purpose product like Upper Crust Dust from Face Time Cosmetics. I use it by itself for those days when I don't want to "put on my entire face" but need a splash of color. I also layer it on top of other products when I want something a bit more dramatic. And, you can mix it with a bit of lotion to add a bit of sparkle to your skin for a festive night...

15 MINUTE BEAUTY FANATIC
OCTOBER 2007

A few days ago, over at one of my favorite blogs, Blogdorf Goodman (winner of the best blog name ever), Annieytown wrote about Face Time Cosmetics and their primer, Velvet Veil. This primer was so amazing that Annie actually threw out her beloved Smashbox primer, which she had chosen after trying out about 30 or so primers in her epic series on primers. Annie didn't just put it away in a drawer somewhere.... She chucked it. This is mind blowing!

A quick glance at the comments from this post shows that there is already stampede for these products. And the readers aren't just buying the primer, they're also getting these great "tubes" that the company has available. This might be the perfect present for your bridesmaids or a relative you know loves makeup. For the bargain price of $90, the tube includes full size products of the primer (usually $22 alone), a blush, 2 eyeshadows, eyeliner, mascara, lipstick and gloss, and a shimmer powder. Not to mention the great instructions they show exactly where and how to apply. This is a great bargain, and you can chose one of 3 tubes or create your own!

The Face Time products don't appear to be available in stores currently, but if this internet buzz picks up, I'd say they'll be showing up in a Sephora near you sometime soon!

Pretty Woman

Finding makeup is easy: There are web sites and catalogs and stores devoted to everything from foundation to fake lashes. Finding the right makeup, well, that’s a different story. Enter Face Time Cosmetics, an online shop started by Linsey Snyder, who founded Face Time after an on-going search for beautiful, stylish, age-appropriate makeup left her with an empty wallet and drawers full of so-so cosmetics. Instead of starting your own frustrating search and assembling your wedding day makeup by piecing together products from different brands, simply pick your look (Romantic, Stunning, or Sultry) and Face Time will send you a Beauty in a Box kit, which includes all the items you’ll need—primer, blush, eye shadows, lip liner, gloss, shimmer powder, and mascara—plus step-by-step application instructions. With the perfect makeup on hand, you can enjoy an extra yoga class or a quiet afternoon knowing that, come your wedding day, all your beauty needs will be taken care of. Talk about saving face.

Interview with Linsey Snyder - Face Time Cosmetics President and Make Up Artist
Temptalia had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Linsey Snyder, aged 29, who is the president and CEO of Face Time Cosmetics. She runs her own cosmetics line, as well as does side work on television shows, socialites, celebrities, and editorial spreads. She’s been working as an artist since she was “old enough to have makeup of [her] own and [had] friends who wanted makeovers!” Her education has stemmed mostly through learning from magazines as well as classes taught by James Vincent at The Powder Group in New York City.

Linsey, as generous as she is, has donated Beauty In a Box in Stunning ($90 value) for a Temptalia giveaway contest! Enter by leaving commenting on the interview (a real, substantive comment - don’t just say hi!) by 11:59 PST November 2nd. One random, LUCKY winner will be selected November 3rd!

Before you can win, though, you have to read the interview!

Temptalia: What surprises you most about working as a makeup artist?
Linsey: How many wonderfully talented makeup artists there are that don’t get recognized and how supportive of an industry it really is if you know how to be resourceful.

Temptalia: What feature do you love to accentuate?
Linsey: I love the bow of the lip. It is so under-rated and it’s so sexy and beautiful. I use an angled liner brush, dunk it in Upper Crust Dust and slightly line the bow of the lip. The subtle flecks of gold reflect light and it looks so angelic…

Temptalia: What made you create your own cosmetic line? What have you learned?
Linsey: My friends and I were so sick of dodging the girls working at the makeup counters in department stores, and I realized that women get to a point where they don’t want the trendiest makeup, and instead they want to look sophisticated, elegant, and tailored. No company guaranteed “appropriate makeup” so we came up with the idea of the Beauty In a Box; a one stop shop for the women who want to simply look well put together. The Face Time Collection is unique because we bridge the gap between boutique and customer.

I have learned so much and I hope to learn more everyday. The most valuable thing I have learned is to trust your gut when making decisions and dealing with people. Many people will cheer you on when you start a business but don’t get discouraged by those who don’t, just get motivated by it. I have learned that starting a company is like being in a maze, when you get to a crossroad you feel out the best next move and then run to light. It is all about trial and error….and constant confidence.

Temptalia: What’s your favorite way to achieve the perfect natural look?
Linsey: Start with a great night sleep, and a clean and exfoliated face. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Dab some Velvet Veil all over the face to bring the natural glow to the surface and add a bit of peachy concealer (not yellow!) to the under eye area (I use my fingers to press the product into the skin)…Pop cheeks with a little Palm Beach Pink Embellblush (the light reflecting formula makes the whites of your eyes appear brighter and whiter!) and sweep some Louise’s Liberality all over the lid, and some Virginia’s Vitality in the crease to help open up the eye. Then I take some Upper Crust Dust in Sand Beige and I dab a tiny bit in the bow of the lip and a little High Glass in Peace which literally pulls the natural pink tone in the lip to the surface while adding the perfect amount of shine. This look brings a lot of life and subtle beauty to a fresh face!

Temptalia: What advice do you have for those wanting to become a makeup artist?
Linsey: Be resourceful. Look professional and act professional and remember that your personality and charisma is what makes it or breaks it. Other makeup artists may have skills but no one is you, and you are the only representation of yourself. People do not respect drama queens, but they do respect and hire back hard workers.

Temptalia: What are three important skills required to be a makeup artist?
1) Be on time 2) Be responsible and on your toes 3) Know how to keep up with the industry…read WWD on Fridays, keep up with beauty blogs, and read Allure Magazine cover to cover every month. Also, makeup artists can and should have subscriptions to GCI and Beauty Packaging. They are free and it’s an easy way to know a lot about the industry which makes you much more valuable.

Temptalia: Do you love working any specific brands or lines?
Linsey: I obviously use mostly Face Time products, but the best skin care line that I have found is called Face It. Also, I use Eve Pearl’s salmon under eye concealer.

Temptalia: Could you share your three beauty tips you could not live without?
Linsey: 1) Moisturize before any application 2) Cream blush THEN translucent powder and THEN powder blush (to create a dimensional look)…3) Line lips after gloss/lipstick is on because it tends to be easier to blend and looks more natural…oh and always stay tuned to Temptalia for the latest and greatest product reviews.

We thank Linsey for letting us have the opportunity to interview her! Don’t forget, you can win Beauty In a Box in Stunning ($90 value) by leaving commenting on the interview (a real, substantive comment - don’t just say hi!) by 11:59 PST November 2nd. One random, LUCKY winner will be selected November 3rd!

Swoonworthy Primer: Velvet Veil by Face Time

I am a firm believer in the power of primer products. Primers can change how makeup stays on your skin. Before primers, my makeup would not stay survive a full work day. It would slowly disappear bit by bit until there were just threads of foundation and powder. I hated the hassle of reapplying or constantly whipping out a mirror for touch ups. I wanted my makeup to last at least 8 hours with just an occasional whack of a powder puff.

Smashbox Primer was originally my savior along with primers from countless brands. I thought I was satisfied until I met Velvet Veil.
Velvet Veil is a silicon based primer with added jojoba. This ingredient makes the Velvet Veil formula extra velvety in comparison to its competition.
Besides feeling fabulous, this primer performs better than other silicon based primers.

I wore Velvet Veil with my usual foundation of choice, La Mer. I set it with Caron Madame powder and wore a mixture of Chanel and Nars blushes. My makeup not only survived a rough work day but it survived intact and fresh all night.
I went to bed early on Friday with a fever and chills.
I was miserable so there was no energy or time to wash my face.
I was aware of the consequences but I did not care.

I woke up in the morning and remembered that my makeup was still on.
As a beauty blogger, this is a crime that should not be repeated in public let alone on the blog.
However, I have to post about the amazing results.
My makeup had no budged.
It did not fade, smear, or disappear.
It was still all there in its glory.

I could have literally went out with the face that greeted me in the mirror. My foundation and blush looked freshly applied. My Caron powder still shimmered brightly.
I blinked a few times and then went over to my makeup drawer and pitched my Smashbox primer tube.

I gush often but consider this review one of my most passionate raves.
I am smitten and will never be without this adorable tube.

It is priced at $22 and is currently available at the website.

BEAUTY NEWS NYC
November 2007

It’s a scene all too common for makeup-loving women. You go to buy a new foundation and by the end of your trip, unsure of what you really need, you’ve been suckered into buying $400 worth of products unlikely to ever be used. Such was a common case for Linsey Snyder, founder of Face Time cosmetics, a line of truly foolproof makeup designed for the modern sophisticate that pulls together a woman’s look, leaving her perfectly made up for any occasion. “It takes the guesswork out of getting ready,” Linsey says. By simplifying and paring down beauty routines, Linsey insists that women no longer have to spend hours (and countless dollars) on useless makeup.

Included in the collection of primers, blushes, lip liners, eye shadows, lip glosses and mascaras, is the Beauty In a Box, four complete makeup kits destined to be a hit this upcoming holiday season. Each box holds the ingredients necessary to create one of four looks – Sultry, Stunning, Romantic or Custom – and step-by-step instructions for creating it. I followed the directions within my own Sultry Beauty Box and (finally!) mastered the perfect smoky eye, which impressively lasted – smudge and run-free – until I swooped it off in the wee hours of the morning!

Any purchase you make also comes with the promise of a willing and able makeup artist to answer questions. They’re available 24 hours a day at hauteline@facetimecosmetics.com. Kind of takes the fear out of makeup, right?

Turn Around Bright Eyes
We all know that the smokey eye is all the rage right now, but lovelies, there are some days when I need that extra lift and just can't bear to go to the dark side of shadow. Which is why I usually turn to my tried-and-true shadow routine of ivory over the lid and brown in the crease – a classic look that seems to enliven my eyes and make me look more awake when I'm feeling all zombie-girl-like. For years, I'd been a MAC Shroom devotee - you know, that ever-so-slightly iridescent shade of bone. But recently I've found a delightfully gorgeous oyster shadow that I keep reaching for in my makeup bag: Face Time Cosmetics's Well-to-Hue in Lauren's Loyalty. This is the perfect satin matte off-white (the picture doesn't do it justice - the shade is actually much lighter) that swipes on like a dream. It's talc-free, so it goes on evenly and is gentle enough for sensitive eyes. Plus, it comes in the cutest little hat box-inspired pot that's totally recyclable. I'm hooked.

Your Best Face Forward

Aug 22nd, 12:06pm By Laura Sargent

Queen City Capitalist, Linsey Snyder, is launching a new cosmetic line in NYC aptly named Face Time Cosmetics. The new makeup line targets women who aspire to look put-together without looking like they spent hours in the powder room.

Snyder's idea, spawned from the concept of accessible beauty, has a timeless, classic look that is clean and fresh. She thinks that sometimes women are more uncomfortable buying makeup than they are other wardrobe accessories. "No one really wants to go to that other floor where the makeup is, because it's intimidating" Snyder said. "Beauty has become too difficult and complicated. There are too many fads we are constantly trying to keep up with, so we've drifted away from classic beauty. Face Time is bringing trends back to reality with tailored looks that make women feel confident and appropriate. The customer tells us how they want to look, and we do the rest. Face Time continues a relationship with clients even after the sale has been made."

Beauty In A Box is one package that includes an array of products--lip gloss, lip liner, eye shadow, eyeliner, mascara, face primer, blush and eye dust. The beauty tools also have clever names such as Upper Crust Dust, Eyelash Etiquette, Well-to-Hue, Privileged Pout and Sophisticake Eyeliner. Customers can find a step-by-step guide within their Beauty In A Box product to help them maintain the look they desire. The take home makeup kit is contained in a well-designed pack that is as easy to tote as it is to use. "We are completely overwhelmed with orders. Although, we have been approached by a few major chain stores already, my idea is to keep our product and company exclusive and young for as long as possible! We are in contact with a very popular, upscale boutique in Buffalo at the moment, and a few in New York City. Our Beauty In a Box concept is taking the industry to a new level, because it provides a tailored and a well thought-out look, all in one pretty package. It's a one stop shop for the customer," Linsey said.

Linsey comes from a local family of entrepreneurs and believes that beginning her own business was inherent in her. "My father, Barry Snyder (Tuxedo Junction, Great Skate, Buffalo Greater Savings Bank), would come home every day after work and tell my brother and I stories about his day, and we would watch him through all of his successes and struggles. I learned that business is very difficult, but if you have a vision of what you want, mitigate your risks, and take the baby steps to get there, it can be extremely rewarding. I was always taught that there is nothing more valuable then being in control of your own life and being your own boss."

Linsey and crew will be attending the Brides' World bridal show in Buffalo this coming January. Her goal is to form and keep a relationship with all of her customers, so she will be in attendance to give free makeovers to anyone willing to sit for her. Let's hope that local boutique takes Linsey on as a supplier. In the meantime, check Face Time out online.
